Last friday we had a special event at the factory: the great NY jazz drummer Ulysses Owens Jr came to Igualada and recorded an exciting improvisation on the cajon with his magic wire brushes.
It all came together at the last minute; I knew that Ulysses was coming to play near us at the Jazz Festival in Terrassa, but it wasn't until the day before that it ocurred me the possibility to record him as a realistic one.
El pasado viernes tuvimos un evento especial en la fabrica: el gran baterista jazz de Nueva York, Ulysses Owens Jr vino a Igualada y grabó una tremenda improvisación en el cajón, con sus escobillas mágicas.
Todo se concretizó en el ultimo minuto; sabía que Ulysses iba a tocar cerca de nosotros en el festival Jazz de Terrassa, pero no fue hasta el día antes que se me ocurrió la idea de grabarle como realistica.
There are so many factors when organizing this things, and didn't count on the possibility of doing it, because Ulysses was going to be in Spain for just a day, and it looked impossible to cram in a recording during the afternoon.
However, Ulysses was really keen on visiting the factory, and since his plane was landing before noon, the chance took shape.
Hay muchos factores cuando se organizan estas cosas y no conté con la posibilidad de hacerlo, porqué Ulysses estaría en España solamente un día, y parecía imposible apretar una grabación en el espacio de una tarde.
Sin embargo Ulysses estaba muy interesado en visitar la fábrica, y como su avión llegaría antes del mediodia, la posibilidad tomó cuerpo.
Next, I called my friend Kiko Caballero, who was the recording engineer for the recording of Paquito Gonzalez dvd, and is currently working for Chano Dominguez, and asked him if he was available to come and help with his professional experience, and he said yes.
Entonces contacté mi amigo Kiko Caballero, el que fue ingeniero de audio en la grabación del dvd de Paquito González, y que está trabajando para Chano Domínguez, para pedirle si estaría dsponible para ayudarnos con su experiencia profesionál, y dijo que sí.
That was it, we had everything ready with a few phone calls and e-mails.
I picked up Ulysses at the airport and drove back, got there, ate a sandwich and after a visit of the factory, started recording, which was amazing.
Being a top jazz drummer, Ulysses masters brush playing, and although I have seen the cajon played with this mean by many percussionists from various parts of th world, I never saw the real art of brushes applied, the school that comes from the jazz tradition, and from masters such as Philly Joe Jones, to make an example.
Así se hizo, teniamos todo listo al cabo de unas cuantas llamadas y e-mails.
Recojí a Ulysses en el aeropuerto y de vuelta, llegamos, comimos un bocadillo, y después de una visita a la fábrica empezó la grabación, que fue asombrosa.
Siendo un crack de la batería jazz, Ulysses es un maestro del toque con escobillas, y aunqué he visto bastantes veces tocar el cajón con este tipo de medio por parte de percusionistas de varias partes del mundo, nunca vi aplicada la verdadera arte de las escobillas al cajón, la que descende de la tradición jazz, y de maestros como Philly Joe Jones, por decir un ejemplo.
Fortunately there is a video of that so I won't have to try and describe it!
He couldn't resist the temptation to play the wall of cajon that made the background and also played a little bit of drums for us, on the kit that I keep next to the office, so we had a private concert!
After that I drove him back to Terrassa, and I realized how patient and committed he had been: having played almost every night in a different country for the two previous weeks, what he really needed was to relax and sleep, yet he didn't spare himself for this occasion.

No pudo resistir a la tentación de tocar la pared de cajones que hacía de fondo, y también tocó un poco de batería, con el set que tengo junto a la oficina, así que tuvimos un concierto privado!
Luego le llevé a Terrassa, y me dí cuenta de lo paciente y entregado había sido: habiendo tocado practicamente cada noche en un país distinto durante las ultimas dos semanas, lo que echaba en falta era realmente dormir y relajarse, pero no se ahorró para esta ocasión.
The Kurt Elling gig was very good too, a big success, and he actually played the cajon a couple of numbers, as you may see on this picture.

El concierto de Kurt Elling fue muy bueno también, un gran éxito, y llegó a tocar también el cajón en un par de temas, como podéis ver en la foto.
